Mission Statement
The Mission of the Steffen Thomas Museum of Art is to provide an opportunity to engage, to learn, and to be inspired through Steffen’s life, art, and legacy.
About the Museum:
After Steffen Thomas’s death in 1990, his widow Sara Douglass Thomas designed and founded the Steffen Thomas Museum of Art to honor her husband’s life and legacy as an artist. Sara opened the Museum at the age of 90 and remained involved the last decade of her life. The culture that Sara and Steffen maintained in their home, studio and art lives today throughout the Museum.
Located in rural Buckhead, GA, near Madison, the Museum is one of the few single-artist museums in the USA. STMA is dedicated to preserving and exhibiting the work of German-American Master Artist Steffen Thomas and to providing art education programs and projects for children and adults in rural Northeast and Middle Georgia communities. The Museum is located in a beautiful bucolic area of Middle GA and is reminiscent of similar museums found throughout the European countryside. It offers a place of quiet contemplation about art and reflection about the important things in life, for the harried business person or anyone who needs a retreat from the stresses of daily life.
In addition to permanent exhibitions of Steffen Thomas’s art, special exhibitions featuring the work of contemporary artists, are displayed on a regular schedule, with related educational programs presented to 750-1000 4th-12th grade students every year. All exhibitions and programs are informed by Steffen’s philosophy of the Brotherhood of Mankind, which is represented extensively in his own art. Diversity and inclusiveness is at the forefront of all selections of artists for exhibitions and programs presented by the Museum.
