Great Folk Art Parade Collectors’ Forum: Thursday, Nov. 8, 2018

For the curious and the enthusiast!

The Steffen Thomas Museum of Art invites the public to the Reception and Folk Art Collectors’ Forum on Thursday, November 8 at 6:00 PM.  Popular folk artist Peter Loose will lead an informal discussion about the folk art movement and answer questions about the Museum’s current exhibition, The Great Folk Art Parade: Down the Lane to STMA.  This free event is a unique opportunity to learn directly from the experts about this movement in which the story behind the art is at least as important as the art itself.  Guests are encouraged to bring up to two pieces of their own folk art to the forum for Loose to evaluate. There is no fee for an evaluation but donations to the Museum will be greatly appreciated.

Forum Schedule of Events:

6 PM Doors Open and Reception Begins

6:20 PM Gallery Tour of The Great Folk Art Parade by Peter Loose

6:45 PM Panel Discussion with Loose and other Serious Collectors

7:15 PM Evaluation of Folk Art Brought to Forum

More than two hundred and fifty pieces of work created by approximately one hundred folk artists are included in The Great Folk Art Parade.  Curated by Peter Loose, the exhibition draws upon the collections of nine serious collectors, providing a rare opportunity to see important works from Howard Finster, Lanier Meadors, St. EOM, Annie Wellborn, RA Miller, and others.  Many pieces are for sale. The exhibition is presented in the Museum’s West Gallery and will be open for viewing at the Forum.

Information about the original event:

In conjunction with the ongoing joint exhibition at the Morgan County African American Museum and the Steffen Thomas Museum of Art, an artists’ round table discussion with all five of the contemporary artists whose works are featured in the show will be held at the Steffen Thomas Museum of Art (STMA) on Saturday, March 3 from 3-5 p.m.

Curator Judy Barber will lead Atlanta-based artists Kevin Cole, Shanequa Gay, Alfred Conteh, Kevin Sipp and Lynn Marshall-Linnemeir in an exploration of the wide-ranging artistic approaches and numerous styles of the paintings, sculptures, photographs and textiles concurrently on display at both museums through March 17th.

The free community event will include a meet & greet with the artists beginning at 3 PM, followed by an informal discussion on the recurring themes in the artists’ works: the search for identity, the longing for home, the power of spirituality, and the importance of inter-generational connection. A Q & A session wraps up the afternoon at 5 PM. For questions or more information, please visit www.steffenthomas.org or call 706-342-7557. The museum is located at 4200 Bethany Road, Buckhead, GA 30625, 7 miles outside Madison, GA.
