Interpreting the Art of Steffen Thomas from the permanent collection of the Steffen Thomas Museum of Art

April 11 – May 25, 2019

Celebrating creative expression through fine art, fiber art and floral designs, and using the works of Master Artist Steffen Thomas, the Steffen Thomas Museum of Art is proud to announce Arts In Bloom opening at the Museum on Thursday, April 11.  Art quilts, created as interpretations of Steffen Thomas work will be on display alongside works from the museum’s collection.

Professional floral designers and fiber artists with a passion for ingenuity and a love of nature, flowers and creativity were carefully chosen to deliver Arts In Bloom programming, such as Quilting lectures and trunk shows, floral demonstrations, and a presentation on cooking with edible flowers.  Guest speakers include Susan Knapp (Blue Moon River), Laura IaRocci (Faith Flowers), Kristin Rodrigeuz (Fiber on a Whim), and Cindy Shultz of Cindy Lutini Catering.

Kristin Rodriguez of Fiber on a Whim will present a trunk show and talk on floral quilting techniques and designs. Kristin and her mother, Jan Girod, are fiber artists with a purpose: “Our mission is to inspire you to use new surface design and embellishing techniques. We believe if it’s not bolted down or already attached to something else, it can be used to create dimension.”

Laura Iarocci, owner of Faith Flowers in Virginia Highlands, is a nationally recognized floral design speaker and teacher who has chaired the Flower Guild at the Cathedral of St. Philip for seventeen years. She will present a lecture/demonstration titled A Taste of European Floral Design that explores floral design and influence from Belgium, France, Ireland, England, and the Netherlands. Laura Iarocci’s  book Faith Flowers will be available for purchase in the Museum’s gift shop, and Laura will sign copies post-lecture.

Cindy Shultz, founder and principal of Cindy Lutini’s Catering at Lake Oconee, will present a talk and working demonstration on how to use edible florals and herbs in culinary creations. Tasting and wine reception to follow – sample five creative floral finger foods.

Susan Brubaker Knapp, an internationally-known fiber artist, designer, author, and teacher, will present “Thread Sketch It!”, a one-hour digital slide show and trunk show.  Topics covered are what thread sketching is (and isn’t!), how to prepare your piece for thread sketching, stabilizers, types of threads and thread weights. She will also discuss sewing machine considerations, great tools, and how to add wonderful detail to your piece with thread, including color, line, pattern, texture, dimension, and movement.   Fearful of trying free-motion stitching? Ms.Knapp will also address how to overcome this fear.

Susan describes her personal journey from that of a traditional quilter to an artist who makes both traditional quilts and art quilts. The focus is on ways for traditional quilters to become more creative by embracing their own “inner artist.” A question-and-answer session with Susan follows.

Faces In Time: Sara’s Salon Gallery Talk (March 21, 2019)

Please join us for a free reception and opportunity to hear about this meaningful exhibition from the individuals who know it best – Lisa Thomas Conner, youngest daughter of Master Artist Steffen Thomas, whose deep knowledge of her father’s works  come from the close relationship they shared and the hours spent together in his studio;  Leanna Leithauser Lesley, needlepoint fiber artist; and Chris Cook, portrait artist. This exhibition includes works-on-paper, sculptures, mosaics, multi-media pieces, and fiber art portraits of renowned individuals who have influenced our world.  The exhibition closes on March 30.

About the exhibition:

Works-on-paper, sculptures, mosaics, and fiber art portraits of renowned individuals who have influenced the world: Jazz Musicians, Civil Rights Activists, Poets, Writers, Politicians, even a Queen . . . immortalized through art by Master Artist Steffen Thomas, needle-point portrait artist Leanna Leithauser Lesley, and southern expressionist painter Chris Cook.

About the reception:

Be one of the first to view our latest exhibition. Enjoy complimentary refreshments while mingling with the artists! Chris Cook and Leanna Leithauser Lesley will both be present and discussing their work in the West Gallery. Some art work in the exhibition will be offered for sale. In addition to the exhibition, guests will have the opportunity to view all Steffen Thomas work on view in the main galleries. The Museum Gift Shop will also be open featuring pottery, jewelry, art work, notecards, calendars, and folk art and more for sale.

Join us and the illustrious Peter Loose for a FREE reception and Sara’s Salon Talk as we say farewell to The Great Folk Art Parade: Down the Lane to STMA.

Loose will lead the final “parade” through the exhibition as he discusses the history of folk art, tells stories about the artists themselves, and provides insight into the popularity of this exciting art movement.

The Great Folk Art Parade: Down the Lane to the Steffen Thomas Museum of Art (Sept 23, 2018- Jan 12, 2019)

Exhibition runs through Jan. 12, 2019. 

Past and current folk artists take center stage in this exhibition featuring works from Howard Finster, George Andrews, RA Miller, Annie Wellborn, St. EOM (Eddie Martin), Peter Loose, Tex Crawford, Kip Ramey, Randy Tobias and other favorites.  Curated by Peter Loose, this exhibition includes works from Loose’s private collection of well-known folk artists as well as those of numerous contemporary artists.  Many works will be for sale from the exhibition as well as through the Museum’s gift shop.  

Schedule of Events:

Sunday, Sept. 23 11:oo AM – 5 PM.  Opening Festival!  Join us as we host Peter Loose and other contemporary folk artists on the lawn with their art for sale, food vendors, live music, art cars, and a 3:00 PM gallery talk by Peter Loose.

Thursday, Nov. 8, 6 – 8 PM. Collector’s Forum for the inquisitive.  Whether you are a collector of folk art, an admirer, or just curious about this movement, this is an opportunity to learn from the experts – Peter Loose and others – as they discuss works in the exhibition. Bring up to two pieces of your folk art in for a free evaluation (donations to the Museum will be appreciated).

Saturday, Dec. 8, 10 AM – Noon. Ornament Workshop.  Led by professional artists Elizabeth Collins and Peter Loose, this workshop provides the perfect opportunity for you and your family to create an original ornament using recycled materials.  Pre-register for this event by calling 706-342-7557 or emailing elizabeth@steffenthomas.org. $5 per person with a maximum family cost of $15.

Saturday, Jan. 12, 2019, 3:00 PM. Sara’s Salon Talk and Exhibition Closing.  Join us for the last event of this exciting exhibition as Peter Loose delivers a Sara’s Salon Talk on the history of folk art,  its popularity and current resurgence, works in the show, and stories about the artists themselves.
