The 3 C’s: Curating, Collecting, Conserving on April 21

The 3 C’s: Curating, Collecting, Conserving

We are thrilled to have Natassha Chambliss facilitate a conversation on art collecting with Andy Hayes and Don Roman at The 3 C’s program on April 21.

Natassha is an advocate and champion for the arts as the owner of Lines Gallery, Inc.  Originally from Milwaukee, WI., Natassha and her husband Jacques began frequenting art exhibitions and building relationships with artists when they relocated to Atlanta. Collecting and preserving art through their collection is just one way the couple is supporting the arts in their community. They are also avid museum patrons and Natassha volunteers and lives a life of service through arts boards. She is currently the Board Chair for the Atlanta Printmakers Studio in Hapeville, GA.

The Chambliss Collection has grown by leaps and bounds since their first purchase in 2017. It boasts of more than 120 works that tell the story of love and their family’s journey back home to the South. Natassha is working to leave a legacy filled with philanthropy and an amazing art collection.

Queer Perspectives Call for Art opens April 13

Announcing STMA’s 2024 Brotherhood Exhibition: Queer Perspectives

In recognition of the vital importance of increased visibility and diverse representation of LGBTQ+ communities and issues, particularly in our rural areas, STMA is honored to present Queer Perspectives, a juried exhibition in Fall, 2024.

“This world is too small for less than brotherhood, too dangerous for less than truth.” Steffen Thomas inscribed his credo on a granite wall at his studio in Stone Mountain over 60 years ago. To him, the reference to “brotherhood” was synonymous with humankind. A philosophy he constantly referred to in his art and life, Steffen believed it necessary that humanity and equality are at the forefront of a society.

For the past four years, STMA has curated an annual exhibition dedicated to this philosophy. Highlighting artists who have traditionally been underrepresented in the art community, these Brotherhood Exhibitions, as they’ve come to be known, feature both emerging and established artists from Georgia and beyond—even internationally.

In today’s context, “brotherhood” carries a gendered weight. It’s potentially limiting, considering the evolution of gender identity and our language surrounding it. Queer Perspectives is a juried exhibition that considers this dialogue around language, queerness, and visibility.

The Call for Art opens April 13 and closes May 13. Open to all Georgia-based, LGBTQ+ identifying artists of all visual media, both emerging and professional.

Celebrating PRIDE 2023! (June 2023)

In recognition of 2023 Pride Month, STMA wishes to celebrate the self-affirmation, dignity, equality, and increased visibility of all those who are a part of the LGBTQ+ community!
.
Please visit the museum to view “Harald Kreutzberg (A German Dancer),” a 1978 acrylic painting which depicts famous gay German dancer of the same name. A study in contradictions, Kreutzberg was an artistic revolutionary, who unabashedly presented ‘gender bending’ modern work, while in his later career profited under the Nazi regime. While other gay men were imprisoned and forced to wear pink triangles, Kreutzberg was encouraged to tour throughout Germany and abroad, despite his relationship with Friedrich Wilckens, Kreutzberg’s composer, and piano accompanist. Also on view is, “Rhythm,” a 1932 bronze bust of Yvonne Georgi, a German dancer, choreographer, ballet master, and dance partner to Kreutzberg. For more information on these outstanding figures, visit the Steffen Thomas Museum of Art in Buckhead, GA!
