Harmony

Thank you to Julie and Bill Brogdon for their generous gift of Harmony. Carved by Steffen from a pine tree that fell on the family’s property in Stone Mountain, we are thrilled to have Harmony as a welcome addition to STMA’s Permanent Collection. Longtime friends of STMA, the Brogdon’s also gave a donation to STMA in acknowledgment of the costs associated with exhibiting, storing, and conserving Harmony.

Meeting at the Intersection

Join us for a panel discussion hosted by Don Roman, STMA President Emeritus, to explore the intersectionality of being Black and LGBTQ+ identifying as an artist in the South, and how these experiences may have changed (or not changed) over the past 60 years. The panel features artists Freddie StylesLaSalle, and Rial Rye, and will be moderated by Demetri Burke, Art Bridges Fellow at the High Museum, working artist, and Queer Perspectives juror.

At STMA, we are celebrating the LGBTQ+ community in our current exhibition Queer Perspectives. STMA is located just outside of Madison, GA, exit 114 off Interstate 20.

Take a Sunday drive and come find joy in art!

Annual Members Meeting 2024

Join us for this year’s Annual Members Meeting on September 8th at 2PM! The meeting will be followed by an acoustic performance at 3PM by singer/songwriter Jonathan McBee, sponsored by The Twelve Oaks. You won’t want to miss this. Jonathan has played in a number of venues (Eddie’s Attic, Red Light Café, many coffeehouses) solo or with a number of bands (Mockingbird’s Wing, Harm’s Way, Vega Verde Wranglers) performing Americana/Singer-songwriter style music. You may hear the influence of David Wilcox or Jack Williams, but mostly you’ll hear Jonathan – his own stories, his own music, his own voice. Refreshments from Hallie Jane’s Catering will be provided.

Happy Birthday, Sara!

Today is Sara Douglass Thomas’ birthday! She would have been 117 years old.

Sara met and married Steffen Thomas in 1933 after a six-week courtship. They lived in Atlanta until 1941, at which time they moved to Stone Mountain where they built their home and raised their four children. She was always loving, kind, and patient woman. Sara also embraced her role as Muse to her great artist.

In 1997, Sara’s dream of building a museum to honor her late husband and his 60-year career as an artist came to fruition when the Steffen Thomas Museum of Art opened in Buckhead, GA on Steffen Jr.’s farmland.

She spent her remaining years surrounded by the art that she loved so dearly and oversaw daily operations.

Celebrate Sara and her legacy at our Founder’s Day Celebration on Sunday, July 21st. Funds raised will help keep admission free for local public schools and support our in-depth art programs. Sara taught in the city of Atlanta school system for 23 years, so by supporting STMA we honor her life.
