Founder’s Day Celebration (July 10th, 2021)
Each year, STMA celebrates the birthday of our founder and Steffen Thomas’s wife, Sara Douglass Thomas. Sara and Steffen were both strong advocates of education. Sara was a life long educator herself, and Steffen felt the education and nurturing of the next generation was imperative for the continuation of civilization, themes which were often depicted in his art.
We would like to invite the public to join us for the 2021 Founder’s Day Celebration on July 10th from 12-2:30 at the museum. There will be guest speakers, refreshments, and the final viewing of the “Healing Our Humanity” special exhibition. Additionally, we are premiering our first award to recognize someone who has contributed greatly to art education – The Charlie Bonner Award for Advancing Art Education.
Because of space restrictions, there are a limited number of tickets available for the event – so please RSVP and purchase your ticket in advance. If you have any questions about the event or how to purchase tickets, please email us at info@steffenthomas.org or call us at 706-342-7557 (office hours are Monday – Friday, 9-5).

The Founder’s Day Celebration is a fundraising function to benefit the upcoming exhibition and art education project Large Art Dreaming.
Large Art Dreaming is an ambitious exhibit collaboration between STMA and Athens artist Broderick Flanigan. This summer, Broderick is working with a group of students from Clarke Co. Middle to create several large scale panel murals, which will be featured pieces of the exhibition. Together, they will create artwork inspired by Steffen Thomas’s Brotherhood of Mankind philosophy.
When the show opens, Broderick will also begin painting a mural on STMA’s West Gallery wall – as designed by a small group of students from Clarke Co. High and Morgan Co. High. For 1-2 weeks, visitors will be able to watch Broderick slowly bring it to life. The student’s paintings, the mural, and a selection of smaller works by Broderick and Steffen Thomas will create the exhibition.
